Do men really prefer blondes?

I would say no, even though it's many peoples perceptions that men prefer blondes.  I would however say that men prefer women with a flat hair colour, for example pure blonde, pure brown or pure black.  I don't know why it just looks far better when a woman has a flat colour of hair.

I would say that men talk a lot more about blondes.  Blondes tend to be more dizzy, do more silly things and generally attract a guys attention more than women with other hair colour.  There was some research published in a British newspaper last year that blondes make guys act dumb, guys just become stupid and do stupid things when there is a blonde about.  But I'm not sure how true that is.  But to put things in context, I fancy just as many brunettes, black haired ladies as I do blondes.  It's just that the blondes make me notice them and therefore I get more chance to talk to them.  Despite there public image, I think blondes are just as intelligent as women with any other hair colour.

And long haired ones??

In most cases a guy definitely prefers long hair.  Long hair is feminine, there are some occassions where women suit short hair, but in most cases men prefer long, flowing, shiny locks.  As long as it doesn't constantly hang over their face and as long as it is not ridiculously long, like down to her butt.

Me and a mate were having this convo the other day. I said that they do because it nearly always looks sexier than brunette or red.

I wouldn't say that really, to name a few celebrities there is: Demi Moore, Nelly Furtado, Angelina Jolie and my favourite Mylene Klass.  There are just as sexy as any blondes I can name.

Oh yes, and would a man choose a size 8 brunette over a size 18 blonde?

You can't compare them.  Show me some a group of 100 photos of a size 8 brunette and size 18 blonde and there probably would be a sway towards the size 8.  But I'd doubt that the size 8 would win every time.  The difference after meeting up with those ladies would probably mean more of the size 18 will be seen as attractive, but attraction is not just about looking at a photo, it's about the person's rapport with you and personality as well.
